The Neptune is where the heart is!

"Every time I come here I think of my wedding breakfast and the big day,” Glenn tells me.

“Me and my wife had our first date here.  And we ended up asking if we could have our wedding breakfast here, because it means a lot to us."

Glenn Perkins, who owns Norfolk Decor, paints the sash windows as he chats.

The former 18th century coaching inn was taken over by chef Kevin Mangeolles and his wife Jacki in 2007, and since then Glenn's been helping maintain it - inside and out.

“Fond memories from nearly 20 years of decorating now," Glenn continues, "With an old building, it’s just a constant battle of maintenance and repair - it’s a labour of love as such.

"I do like doing the old ones, especially a nice historic building like this one.”

The charming property still has much of its original Georgian character, with 5 sash windows at the front. And inside a fine-dining restaurant that has continuously held a Michelin star since 2009.

"I remember when I told Kevin I was bringing my now wife to dinner, and him saying is it someone special? I said, at the end of the day you know when I come here for a meal, it’s going to be with someone special!

"We got married in Old Hunstanton church and having the wedding breakfast here, with just friends and family, it worked perfectly."

“A lot goes into the windows, it’s not just a 5 minute job, there's a lot of prep - the painting’s the easy bit really.  I originally painted these when they came out of the factory nearly 20 years now."

I remark that's the whole of their life, “Pretty much yeah,” he laughs, “I’ve done these 5 or 6 times now - every 3 or 4 years.”

“Every time we’ve come here we’ve had such a great meal we just can’t wait to come back,” Glenn says before I leave.

And admire your paintwork?  I ask.  "Yes, there's always that as well!"

After a week of showers, and even a hail storm, Glenn and his team have finally finished.  The Neptune is looking fresh, summer ready and even more inviting.
